Hush
Your Mouth! is a community newspaper produced by professor Charles Simmons and
written by journalism students at Eastern Michigan University.
The print edition places emphasis on metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan
youth and their positive activities. However,
it addresses the achievements of all such residents – regardless of age.
Hush
your mouth is an
expression of stunning accomplishment, for our version of news is that which
educates and elevates, as well as informs readers about the challenges of the
city and its residents. When we
discuss challenges to the community, we do it from the perspective of grassroots
participation.
Hush
Your Mouth! welcomes contributions from students at area secondary schools and
universities; people involved in labor and business; and individuals within the
prison system. Unfortunately, all submissions must be considered contributions;
we cannot pay for any articles and/or photos at this time.
Individuals interested in submitting an article should make a
conscious effort to write about people or groups who are actively trying to
improve life in the Detroit community. Too
often, these people receive little attention in the mainstream media.
The teen-ager around the corner who volunteers her time tutoring
elementary-aged students or the local community group members who run a soup
kitchen make wonderful interview subjects, for example.
Whenever possible, we ask that writers consider shooting a
couple of photos to accompany their article.
People who find themselves unable to travel to Detroit may
also write about issues or people from their own communities.
Although these stories likely will not be published in the print edition
of the paper, the Hush Your Mouth! Web site intends to include people’s
articles concerning cities throughout Southeast Michigan.
